Monolithic Fuel and High-Flux Reactor Conversion
نویسنده
چکیده
Monolithic fuels are the most promising candidate for a next generation of high-density research reactor fuels. If successfully developed, the remaining HEU-fueled reactors in the world could presumably be converted to low-enriched fuel — and the use of highly enriched uranium in the civilian nuclear fuel cycle eventually terminated. The most challenging type of reactors to convert are single element reactors because their core geometry is generally the least flexible. This specific reactor type is therefore the primary focus of this article. Based on new computational tools and optimization methods, neutronics calculations are presented to assess the potential of monolithic fuels for conversion of high-flux reactors in general and of single element reactors in particular. Performance Gain with Low-Enriched Fuel and Optimized Use of Neutrons
The most challenging type of reactors to convert to low-enriched fuel are high-flux research reactors, which, along with some spallation sources, are the most important neutron sources for modern neutron scattering experiments. Advanced Monte-Carlo computer codes are now available that make it possible to track neutrons from the reactor core, through neutron guides, to instruments and detectors...
متن کاملKINETIC STUDY OF TRR CORE IN FUEL CONVERSION FROM HEU TO LEU
In the conversion of fuel in the Tehran Research Reactor core from Highly- Enriched Uraniutn to Low-Enriched Uranium fuel neutronics analysis, thermal hydraulic calculations and kinetic performance of the core have to be studied. In this study, static and dynamic core performance for HEU and LEU fuels were investigated. In static conditions, two groups of neutron flux distributions in axia...
متن کاملThe Performance of Monolithic Structured Calcium Oxide for Biodiesel
A novel catalytic packing in biodiesel production using a monolithic structured support catalyst is studied. Calcium oxide (CaO) is chosen as the wash coat due to its well established property as a good catalyst. The experiment for the monolithic CaO (4 cm dia, 6 cm height and 400 cell inch -2 ) was performed in a 1000 mL monolithic reactor while the CaO powder experiment was carried out in a 1...
متن کاملRe-characterization of irradiation facilities for k0-NAA at RPI after conversion to LEU fuel and re-arrangement of core configuration
The 1MW pool-type Portuguese research reactor (RPI) was converted from using highly enriched uranium (HEU) to using low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel in September 2007. Although the new LEU core has the same number of fuel assemblies as the first HEU core, it has three assemblies less than the last HEU core and also has a different arrangement of the beryllium reflectors. Therefore, the primary i...
متن کاملDetailed Core Design and Flow Coolant Conditions for Neutron Flux Maximization in Research Reactors
Following the design of the German research reactor, FRM-II, which delivers high thermal neutron fluxes, we have already developed an asymmetric compact cylindrical core with an inner and outer reflector. The goal was to maximize the maximum thermal flux to power ratio, which is a desirable characteristic of a modern research reactor. This design, for a 10 MW power, was analyzed using MCNP, ORI...
